You may deserve the best but don’t expect the world to serve the same on a silver platter. You will need a strategy when it comes to yearly job appraisals.

Listed below are the top 10 strategic advice for your appraisal time. But you can always use it to keep building a report sheet over the whole year.

1. List your best accomplishments & pair them with your KPIs

You should keep a journal of all the good work along with impact analysis. The KPIs assigned to you must be met gracefully. This is the most important part of your job. You have to outperform here in every aspect. If your accomplishments do not match your KPIs, then probably your job description does not match your skills.

2. List your areas of improvement

This shows a growth mindset. This also shows that you know the areas where you need to improve. This helps you to establish a baseline. You may also ask to be mentored if you need help in a particular area.

3. List down any certifications/learnings or seminars/demos

This shows the value you have added to your portfolio while you were also doing your assigned work. This also helps to make a lateral move withing the company if a relevant role opens up. Companies will always prefer to use your talent to their advantage. But you have to broadcast the same to the HR department first so that your name pops up in the internal job search engine.

4. Good to have numbers/figures to show growth

Nothing beats concrete data. Always have figures to back your report. This helps to set very high standards in any meeting. Data do not lie & cannot be ignored. But always add an emotional quotient to the facts & figures. This shows you passion for your work & delight at achieving targets.

5. Share your career progression goals

If you don’t have your future sorted internally, it will be very difficult to convey the same externally. You have to feel ready to move to the next role. You must also understand what you are up for in the next progression. Research your next role responsibilities & be prepared.

6. Share peer/client/external testimonials

All cross team work needs to be documented & presented formally. It is very important to have written testimonials or emails in a standard format from external parties. Peers would normally fill the details in the appraisal form but all other testimonials will have to be assimilated & presented.

7. Ask for more responsibility

This is the only way to get promotions. If you are ready to take more responsibility & already excelling at your current role, you are ready for the next role.

8. Ask for feedback & take them professionally

Feedback help you grow as well as get an insight into your blind spots. If you don’t agree, just take it with a smile like a professional. Mostly there would be some truth in the feedback. Learn & grow from them & move on.

9. Share challenges/negative experiences tactfully

It is always a good idea to share any challenges which is keeping you from delivering your best work. This helps to escalate such cases in future. But always keep your negative experience feedback brief.

10. Lastly, talk about your compensation/raise

The key here is to be realistic and aware of the market standards. Companies will always strive for profit & very rarely for employee welfare. But you have to look after your future & loved ones. So do your research & feel free to ask what you deserve.

Always have a record of your appraisals for future discussions.
Stay calm in all scenarios. It is just another test of your character.

Always value yourself to succeed.

No one can take your intrinsic value away. You will shine ultimately as true professionals always brightens the world for the rest of us.
